Fantasy sports and how they work

Fantasy sports are a relatively new age genre of online sports in which many imaginary or virtual teams that are based entirely on a real sport played by real players are assembled. Currently, fantasy sports are hugely trending, and they constitute an industry that is worth several billions of dollars and rapidly growing.

Fantasy sports have their origin in a tradition known as rotisseries, which trace back to the second World War. Fantasy golf is reported to have first been developed in the 1950s, and the first reported fantasy football game being played at Oakland in 1962. This was closely followed by the initiation of the first fantasy baseball league in 1963.

The arrival of the internet era significantly contributed to the mushrooming interest in fantasy sports with even well-known sites such as Yahoo offering its users a chance to play fantasy sports free of cost.

In fantasy sports, be it football, baseball, or any other such competitive sport online, the virtual teams and players mirror the statistics achieved by the actual teams and players. The performance of each competing team and player is then converted into a standardized system of points that are tallied and managed by a fantasy league commissioner. Just as players are recruited, traded, and cut off in the actual games, players in the fantasy sports are also recruited, traded, and cut off.

Significantly, over 58 million people in the country are known to be avid players of fantasy sports, with the industry continuing to boom in leaps and bounds.

Many fantasy sports players are of the opinion that the drafting process is the most exciting part of the online gaming trend, where each team owner takes turns to fill up his roster with the names, statistics, and profiles of the actual players and teams.

The American Fantasy Sports Trade Association has research evidence that indicates that each online player of fantasy sports spends upwards of $450 on these online fantasy sports, with interest being typically divided between football and baseball. These fantasy sports are closely followed by auto racing and basketball.

A shorter, accelerated version of the regular fantasy sports are the daily fantasy sports, in which the virtual game is conducted over the span of a single day or a few days, as opposed to virtual play that mirrors the actual play that goes on for the entire length of a season.

Today, there are literally hundreds of websites and apps that offer fantasy sports, and a huge proportion of Americans state that they commonly play fantasy sports on their smartphones, especially while commuting by public transport.

While some people play simply because it offers a sense of connection to others who share a passion, there are many who are addicted to fantasy sports for the sheer thrill of competition.

If you suffer from addiction, living a sober lifestyle is a lifelong journey. For many, the first step is admitting there’s a problem and voluntarily entering a 28 or 60 day alcohol and drug treatment rehabilitation program. Many individuals enter inpatient rehab centers by their own accord, but with a lot of feelings of anger, shame, fear, animosity, and guilt. Inpatient rehabilitation centers differ greatly,. Some offer spa like settings, while other offer residents the opportunity to get in touch with nature. Additionally, each patient’s rehabilitation process is very personal with a treatment plan that aims to focus on their addiction and unique needs. However, the greater goal of all drug and alcohol addiction centers is to offer a 24-hour support network to give patients the skills needed to live a sober lifestyle once they leave rehab using these techniques:

1. Treatment intake or initiation process
When a patient enters a professional alcohol and drug rehab program, they begin the recovery journey. Treatment intake marks their introduction to a professional treatment program, where they’re met by a certified counselor who may ask them the following questions to get an understanding of their addiction and unique needs:

  • A one-on-one consultation – to assess the patient’s addiction and rehab goals.
  • Patient history – to get an understanding of any underlying issues  (i.e., health or psychological issues, depression, stressors, abuse, etc.) that may help identify how and when the addiction started.
  • Substance usage – to assess the severity of the addiction and create a treatment plan.
  • Complete physical examination – to determine when the patient last used.
  • Detox test – those who test positive for alcohol or drugs will undergo detox.
  • Check in – where all personal luggage and belongings are checked for contraband (i.e., drugs, alcohol, weapons, cell phones, etc.).

2. Detoxification process
An addiction is the body’s dependence (both mentally and physically) on drugs or alcohol. This is why rehabilitation centers put residents through a monitored inpatient detox in order to safely oversee physical withdrawal. The detox process can last anywhere between a few days to a week with the most severe symptoms occurring within the first 24 to 48 hours. Side effects of detox are painful and can be life-threatening, which is why detox can include giving the patient supervised substances and medications to make the process safe as possible while continuously monitoring physical and mental health.

3. Rehabilitation and recovery process
Substance abuse rehabilitation programs offer a closely followed schedule that provides patients structure while aiming to alter abusive-behaviors. For instance, patients are required to wake up at the same time every day, eat balanced meals, and participate in counselling, group therapy, 12-step programs, and other therapies (i.e., exercise, art, music, etc.). This supportive, therapeutic atmosphere challenge their addiction honestly and realistically by identifying toxic patterns, behaviors, and relationships while providing skills and education to help them return to sober, post-rehab life.

The recovery doesn’t end after the patient’s time in inpatient rehab has completed. However, the skills and techniques learned in rehab aim to help the patient live a sober lifestyle. Patients leaving rehab may return to stressful environments (i.e., work, social lives, and family) that may threaten their sobriety by triggering addictive behaviors, which is why rehab will set the stage for long-term support outside of the facility—including daily or weekly check-ins, Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, support groups, and ongoing counselling with a substance abuse professional.

Donating to a cause is an act of generosity and compassion, but have you ever wondered what truly happens to your cancer donations or international border donations once they leave your hands? Questions surrounding administrative costs, effective utilization of funds, and the overall impact of contributions are pivotal in guiding donors toward making informed choices at top donation organizations. Delving into the operations of well-known charities like the Wounded Warriors Project, St. Jude’s, the Salvation Army, JDRF, and Sloan Kettering, this exploration sheds light on the transformative journey your donations undertake.

1. Administrative overheads

One of the first stops on the journey of your donation is the realm of administrative costs. Many charitable organizations allocate a portion of funds to cover essential operational expenses, including salaries, office space, and other overheads. While necessary for the smooth functioning of the organization, savvy donors often look for charities that maintain a reasonable balance, ensuring a significant portion of contributions directly supports the intended cause.

2. Program funding

A substantial chunk of your donation typically goes directly to fund the programs and initiatives championed by the charitable organization. Whether it’s feeding the hungry, supporting medical research, or providing education, this segment of the journey ensures that your contribution translates into real-world impact. Savvy donors inquire about the programmatic breakdown of funds, seeking transparency on how their money will be utilized to make a difference.

3. Community outreach

For charities involved in community outreach, your donation might find its way into initiatives aimed at directly benefiting individuals and families. This could include setting up shelters, offering rehabilitation programs, or conducting workshops to empower communities. Understanding how your donation contributes to these on-the-ground efforts provides a tangible connection to the impact you’re making in people’s lives.

4. Research and development

In the realm of medical and scientific charities, a portion of your donation often fuels research and development initiatives. Whether it’s finding cures for diseases, developing new technologies, or advancing scientific knowledge, this segment of the journey holds the promise of transformative breakthroughs. Knowing that your contribution is propelling innovation in these fields adds a layer of significance to your act of giving.

5. Advocacy and awareness

Some charities channel donations into advocacy and awareness campaigns to address systemic issues and drive positive change on a broader scale. Your contribution may fund efforts to influence policies, raise awareness about critical social issues, or promote sustainable practices. This dimension of the journey ensures that your donation becomes a catalyst for lasting societal impact.

6. Emergency response and relief

In times of crises, donations play a crucial role in funding emergency response and relief efforts. From natural disasters to humanitarian crises, your contribution aids organizations in providing immediate assistance, including food, shelter, and medical aid, to those affected. Understanding this facet of the donation journey highlights the agility and responsiveness of charitable organizations in times of need.

7. Capacity building

Some charitable organizations invest in building their own capacity to enhance their effectiveness in the long run. This could involve training staff, upgrading infrastructure, or implementing technology to streamline operations. While this aspect may not provide immediate visible impact, it contributes to the sustainability and efficiency of the organization, ensuring that future donations continue to make a meaningful difference.

With the winter season looming, you might be one of many who are planning to go somewhere warm for the holidays. Whether you are looking into a Turks and Caicos beaches booking, or a Bahamas booking, it may be in your best interest to look into cruise travel this year. However, eating on a cruise ship should be something you want to prepare yourself for first. Here is a list of 5 cruise food pitfalls to avoid:

1. Too much spice

Cruise ship dining often offers a wide variety of international cuisines, and while this can be exciting, it’s essential to be mindful of the spice levels in your meals. The chefs on board may use different spice blends and seasonings than you’re used to, and overindulging in spicy foods can lead to discomfort or digestive issues. To avoid this pitfall, start with milder dishes and gradually explore spicier options as your palate adjusts. Ask the waitstaff for recommendations if you’re unsure about a dish’s spice level.

2. Forgetting to drink water

With all the tempting food and beverages available on a cruise, it’s easy to forget to stay hydrated. Dehydration can lead to fatigue and discomfort during your trip. Make a habit of drinking water regularly, and consider carrying a refillable water bottle to ensure you have access to fresh water throughout the day. Hydrating between alcoholic or sugary drinks is especially important to keep you feeling your best.

3. Open-air dining options

Cruise ship buffets are notorious for their tempting array of dishes, but they can lead to overindulgence and unhealthy choices if you’re not careful. To avoid this pitfall, survey the buffet before loading up your plate. Opt for a variety of colorful fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains. Avoid mindlessly piling on high-calorie items and save room for desserts in moderation. It’s also a good idea to use smaller plates to help control portion sizes.

4. Too much alcohol

Cruise vacations often include tempting drink packages, but it’s easy to overindulge in alcoholic beverages. Excessive alcohol consumption can lead to a host of problems, including dehydration, seasickness, and poor decision-making. To avoid this pitfall, set a personal limit for the number of drinks you’ll have each day and make sure to pace yourself. Opt for non-alcoholic alternatives or enjoy a mocktail to savor the experience without overdoing it.

5. Piling on the pub grub

Cruise ships often have enticing pub-style or fast-food options available, such as burgers, hot dogs, and fried foods. While indulging in these treats occasionally is part of the cruise experience, overeating them can lead to digestive discomfort and weight gain. Be mindful of portion sizes and balance your meals with healthier options from the ship’s buffet or dining rooms. Consider having a lighter meal before enjoying some pub grub to curb your appetite.

By being aware of these cruise food pitfalls and taking a thoughtful approach to your dining choices, you can fully enjoy your cruise vacation without experiencing unwanted discomfort or health issues. Bon appétit, and bon voyage!
